Rob asked:
I just got an HDTV, and I have it hooked up using the component video cables. I also have an HDTV cable box, hooked up with the component video cables. Nonetheless, the picture still looks squashed. Why is that? Is there something in the menu that I have to adjust as in preferences?

Your aspect ratio may be off. Read the manual for any buttons on the remote or TV to fix that.

Don’t know for sure as I don’t have a widescreen television, however, the television may need to be set for 16X9 ratio if that’s the signal you are recieving through the cable box.
Try a widescreen movie through a DVD player and see what you get.
Make sure the output of the player is set to 16X9 and not standard.

Check for an “aspect ratio” button or menu item. You can usually adjust the setting to “full” (for HD programming), zoom or standard (which will present standard def with bars on either side.

I have a HDMI cable on mine and i think composite cables do the same thing. If the show is not meant to be shown in 16:9 it shows it in 4:3 by default. I have a 52′ samsung and I can only get my HD Channels in 16:9 now with my hdmi cable now if i switched back to AV Cables on my TV remote i have a PSIZE button that switches between 16:9 and 4:3

You may need to adjust a setting on your cable box that tells it what type of TV you have. If you have a Motorola cable box, you can adjust its output type by turning it off and pressing the menu button on the front.
