Why are HDMI cable so much different in price?

hdmi
Megan asked:

I want to buy a HDMI cable for my xbox 360, I don’t want to buy the microsoft one, or the ones in best buy, they are like 100 dollars for 6′, gold color plug. There are some on ebay for just 6-7 bucks, same length. Is there any differences?? Picture quality difference?

the quality barely differs, so i would go with the 10 dollar cable. I have tried a 100 dollar cable and compared to my 10 dollar cable, and the difference is slightly noticeable. The difference is gold plated tips for good connection since gold is a much finer metal than the metal in the other cables

Just get the cheapest one you can get. It’s all gimmicks to try and make you think you’re getting a better deal but in all honesty you wont notice a difference between the $100 one and the $1 ones you get on amazon

You should never pay more than $10 for a standard length HDMI cable.

At this place you can get a good HDMI cable for about $5 (including shipping costs).

There are many reasons why we can bring you such great value. The main reasons would be as follows. Elimination of the middle man. We are a national distributor working directly the factories and because of this we are basically bringing the product to you at wholesale prices. Retail stores and national brand products have much more overhead including, nationwide networks of stores, distribution warehouses, large commissioned sales staffs, advertising budgets, packaging, etc. But the main reason would be mark up. Most retail work on a Loss Leader model of sales. They advertise high ticket items at great prices leaving them with little to no margin. They make up that margin with all the add on items they can sell you such as extended warrenties, batteries, cases and cables. They sell these items with a very high mark up.

Like mjx385 said, you should never spend more than $10 on an HDMI cable. This means NEVER buy them at a store like Best Buy. The most important thing to know is to buy a 1.3v cable, NOT 1.2v. Also, get the shortest cable you need because the quality of the picture and sound start to degrade the longer the cable is. You normally won’t notice a difference until you get to around 20ft though.
