I recently bought a LDC tv. Do I need to buy a Digital TV converter box?
I’m really confused between LCD and HDTV and HDMI. What is all of that about?

HDTV is a thing, HDMI is a port on your TV. So basically you watch HDTV over HDMI.

  2. John C Says:

LCD is the type of screen, how the light is produced…

HDTV is your signal, Your High Definition TV comes from the cable company…to the box…you do need one, and then onto your LCD

The HDMI is the cable that us used to get the picture from your box to the television.

LCD = The type of TV screen. It stands for Liquid Crystal Display and is just the type of screen and TV.

Plasma = The other type. It’s usually either plasma or LCD.

HDTV = High definition TV - It is what it says.

HDMI = High Definition Multimedia Interface and is just a type of cable to connect electronics to HDTVs, such as a LCD TV.

E.g. I want to plug my PS3 into my Sony LCD HDTV using the HDMI cable included.

hdtv is not the way to go because LCD is way better especially if you bought a 1080p which is the highest quality tv and hdmi is just a hook up like the three components on the back white yellow and red its just that hdmi is hi def sound and video.

HDTV or High Definition Television is the new way to watch tv its super high quality. HDMI or High Definition Multimedia Interface is the way you connect to a HDTV

LCD is a not such a good quality type of TV. You will only need to buy a digial tv box if your area is being switched over to the Digital.

    Hope this helps

well do you have cable or satalite if you do you will not need a DTV box. However if you do not have cable you will need to buy a DTV box. most all LCD tv’s are high definition. High Definition is usually defined as having 720P or higher resolution. LCD refers to the type of technology used in the TV. LCD stands for liquid crystal display your LCD TV works by running electrical current through liquid crystal tv in your tv. Finnaly HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is a audio/visual cable used for transmitting uncompressed digital media. HDMI is used for connecting blue-ray dvd players, cable boxes, playstation 3’s, Xbox 360’s etc to high definition TV’s. HDMI can carry high definition video as well as eight channels of audio. So basically its all about better video quality

So I read through these answers and some of them sound like a 1st grader explaining that rain is gods tears. Some of the other answers are almost right. SO here is the real answer. LCD does in fact stand for liquid crystal display and is a type of screen that displays the picture passing light through small crystals. Not all LCD tv’s are HD, it will say if it is an HDTV or not. A few years ago about half were HD and the other half just standard but now the majority of LCD televisions are HD. Also HD screens are wider giving you an aspect ratio of 16×9 which is rectangular as opposed to the older 4×3 aspect ratio that is more square. HDTV stands for high definition television, The “HD” is a signal displaying more lines of resolution than the old standard def. More lines results in a clearer more crisp picture. 1080p, 720p, 1080i, are the 3 different resolution line specs for HD broadcasts. Your HDTV may either be native 720p or native 1080p. A 1080p tv can display a 1080p signal which is considered the best of HD. Currently there are no networks that broadcast anything in 1080p, only bluray, XBOX360 and PS3 have 1080p content. All networks broadcast in 1080i or 720p. the number stands for the lines of resolution the letter “p” stands for progressive which is the way the tv scans the lines. Whether your tv is 1080p or 720p it will still receive all networks and if you have bluray or either game console it will still be in HD, the signal is just converted internally to 1080i so don’t think you won’t be able to display your xbox in HD, it just won’t be 1080p and to tell you the truth, you wouldn’t see a difference anyway between 1080p, 720p or 1080i. The “i” stands for interlaced which means the tv scans every other line starting with the odd numbers and then goes back and scans the even lines, all this is done at 60 times per second which gives you a picture. Progressive scans the lines straight down.

HDMI does indeed stand for high definition media interface and is a cable that is used to hook up an HDTV to HD devices such as HD cable boxes, bluray players, PS3, etc. The cable carries high def picture as well as digital audio all in 1 cable. You do not need to buy a digital tv converter box. Digital tv is not HD, its just a digital signal. In February 2009 tv is going digital, its not going HD. Basically it means that if you have an old tv and use rabbit ears antenna to get your signal and don’t have a cable box or satellite then you would need a digital converter box to watch tv. This change over will affect maybe 15% of people who still use an old tv with an old antenna. In order to receive an HD signal you need an HD cable or satellite box.
