You need an HD-DVD, can’t use regular DVD-Rs

You can’t burn your HDTV programs as HD onto a DVD. DVD only supports 480i and 480p. For recording purposes, they only support 480i (that I know of). HD programs are typically 720p or 1080i which is too high resolution for existing DVD recorders.
This doesn’t mean you won’t get a nice picture, you just won’t get full HD on the DVD.
If you have a DVD recorder that takes video in, you can connect the S-video out from the DVR to the S-video in on your DVD recorder, play your HD programs on your DVR and record the output. A friend of mine does this.
Later this year, the TiVo Series 3 HD DVR will come out. As I understand it, it’ll support TiVoToGo burning of DVDs. One could only hope that as Blu-ray and/or HD-DVD HD disc burners become available for PCs and Macs, TiVoToGo might also support burning HD programs to those discs as well.
