Is it worth buying an Xbox 360 without a HDTV?

Jodie P asked: I am planning to buy one in a few months.
There is no way I can afford a HDTV so don’t plan on getting one anytime soon.
Are the games still playable without HD?
And are the graphics going to be better than the PS2?
I realise that the graphics will be way better in HD [...]
