   Your TV is always scaling its input as needed and displays at 720p - its native resolution.
   When you press info or display you see the resolution of the source!! (not the TV).
   The typical output resolution of a Standard-def DVD player is indeed 480i. If you have a progressive DVD player and use component cables, you can go up to 480p.
   So, don’t worry, your TV works just fine.

   A DVD only carries 480 video. Your TV is up-converting the video to the internal 720 format it wants, but it’s still only standard definition magnified.

   Ever hear of BluRay or HD-DVD? These disks carry HD video, not standard def.

   Your Phillips player is not a HD/BluRay player.
