It improves the Low Def DVDs you already have....and when you start buying the HD-DVDs.....Boyyyyyy are you gonna LOVE THAT PIX !! I plan on getting one soon..... And believe me, when Blu-Ray costs TWICE as much as a HD-DVD player it's going to lose the DVD war. I saw Sony lose the VHS /Betamax war because their technology was more expensive. Laser Discs and Laser Disc players are old, and will not output the kind of quality your new HDTV needs to make it look good. At least with DVD players, they will upconvert the signal to 720p or even 1080i, but I don't know of any laser disc players that have this capability. Your parents will most likely have to upgrade to DVD's for better quality, or bypass regular DVD's altogether and by a new HDDVD player, or a Blu-Ray player, or a Universal player that reads both HDDVD and Blu-ray. This should ensure that they get the best quality picture out of their new HDTV. They might not want to hear that, but there's not much choice.
