For optimal viewing size, you are on the right track checking distance to the screen. Put your measurements in here:.
From personal experience,I'd say a 42" to 46" is right, and 37" is borderline too small. I have a 50" at 9.75 feet and I wish I could get a foot or two back for better viewing.
In 37", 42", or 46", IMHO your very best bet, dollar for dollar, for BOTH the best performance and reliability, is the Panasonic Viera plasma! If, however, you for some reason need an LCD, the best brand for 37" and up, again BOTH for performance and reliability, is Sony followed by Toshiba and then Sharp and Samsung. Good hunting!

I would go for the 37" TV, That extra 5" makes a lot of difference.
Go with the 1080 as this is the best result for HDTV.
An check the contrast ratio 1000-1 is the best. Makesure it also features digital tv (For the swich over!) and check out reviews of it online by goggling the model number.

There are only 4 manufacturers out there who acutally make TV's Panasonic, Sony, Samsung cant remember the other, but all other TV have chinese parts inside them and you are just paying for the brand name/out box shell. Some TVS do have the samsung panels inside them like DMTECH which is made in the same factory as the LG/Samsung tvs. so if you want cheap and qaulity you could even go with that!
Good luck choosing
