I'm afraid I must also disagree with Chaos Man.

Look at the new "Wall E" DVD - has a bunch of test patterns and instructions so people can set brightness, color balance, sharpness, etc - to roughly calibrate the display.

You want to search for "ISF Calibration". This is an organization that trains techs about video and how to calibrate TV's and Projectors to bring them to standards for White, Red, etc.

If you read the magazines like Home Theater - they also make a point of reviewing TV's before and after calibration and report if the TV cannot be brought into standards.

You can do your own rough calibration with the BluRay version of Digital Video Essentials. For about $18 - it's a good start to your education.

Calibration is not a scam. Your TV has adjustments - but most people are to non-technical to know how to adjust them other than "make it look good". It is a bit of a luxury.

Note: standards are important. Just look at the standards for a movie theater - THX is the only one.

i am sorry about chaosman there, he is entitlted to his opinion but he is a tad wrong.

I work for firedog, the spyder calibration service that we offer does not SCAM you out of your money. it expands the life of your tv from 6 (set on vivid) to 12 years (set on custom, using the calibration).

I became a technician by applying for the job, no training, it is easy to do once you know how to do it. there is no real training, the computer program does it for you. If you were to invest in the spyder calibration software yourself, you could teach yourself how to use it.

The thing you have to worry about is making sure that you do not calibrate the TV wrong, if you do calibrate the TV wrong, then you will take the life down drastically. That is why the program exists. Look up spyder calibration on Google.

Apply at Best buy or something.

rofl

Anyway, if you really would like to scam morons out of their money, work for some place like Future Shop or Best Buy. Anyone who says they are going to "tune" your HDTV is scamming you.

Think I'm just being a jerk? Google HDTV tuning scam.

7. These pricey TVs look so great out of the box that it's a waste to pay a small fortune to have a professional calibrate your set. Well, what's a small fortune, these days? Didn't you just pay one for your set? So, what's a few more dollars to make it sparkle? If you have a THX-mastered DVD, we show you how to calibrate your own set. Or you can purchase a DVD to help for around $50 or less.
