How can i receive digital channels on my antenna hooked to my HDTV?

Kirk B asked:

I got a Toshiba 37″ HDTV that has the digital converter built in. I have an antenna and I’ve hooked it up, played with settings, and there is still no digital signal coming in at all. There was a “digital test” on TV earlier, and I “failed” it. Is there something special with the type of antenna I need? Currently, I’m trying to get my RCA ANT1020 antenna. Any ideas or suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks!

i was under the immpression that digital signals were not sent through the air but through boxes and satelites dishes. because isnt a digital signal a direct electronic connection rather than an air wave… the whole point of getting rid of the old air signals was to free the airways up so we wouldn’t have as many signals going across so it’s like a paradox to just go and make digital run through the air aint it….
you gotta pay for digital, lol.

You probably haven’t had your HDTV scan for digital antenna signals. Unlike analog tuners, digital tuners have to be set up by scanning for all possible digital channels. It’s in the HDTV’s menu.

If you can’t find the channel scan in the TV’s menu, post the model number of your HDTV.

If your HDTV can’t find digital broadcasts there are two possibilities:

    1. You might need a better antenna. In North America analog and digital broadcasts use the same antennas. But so people find they need a better antenna for digital reception.

What antenna is best is extremely dependent on local conditions. The idea that their are special “digital” or “HD” antennas is just marketing hype. All TV antennas are “HD”.

    2. If you are in a remote area that gets broadcasts through translators, their probably aren’t any digital broadcasts to pick up. You might want to add your zip code and distance to transmitters to your question.

Go to antennaweb.org and see if you have any stations nearby…you maybe out of reach to get a signal.

If you switch your TV to cable, run a scan and see if you find any channels. If you can, place the antenna outside for better reception. Also, you can place the antenna higher up, or on a metal box for better reception.
