Having said that, the unquestionable better signal translates into a dubiously better picture. I have been doing this a while and I can tell the diference between HDMI and GOOD component cables. It is just a matter of how good you want your good picture to be, and what it is worth to you. As far as your cables go, there can be a HUGE diference in quality depending on not only what kind of connection you are using, but the grade of wires you are plugging in. Talking about HDMI cables, Component cables, Audio Interconnect Cables, Speaker Wire....saying that "a wire is a wire" is flat out untrue. If the more expensive wire is worth a relative lot of money for a relative little increase in performance is all subjective. For some people it isn't worth $50/month to upgrade to digital cable to give you twice as good a picture as analog. Other people will spend $2000 on an upgraded power cord for high efficiency and low distortion for their DVD player. A $25 tire for your car might be fine on a Yugo, but it probably just won't cut it on a Mazzaratti. A $25 bottle of wine really is NOT the same as a $250 bottle. It really isn't. Another thing with hdmi is, its only one cable, I have so many wires behind my TV, i wish I had all hdmi connections. While these wire may be fairly expensive, you only have to buy them once.
