Do I have to use the dvr through my cable company?

dvr
candace b asked:

I want to get a dvr now that the prices have come down. Will it work with my cable box (Time Warner) or do I have to use theirs. If so will it be fairly simple to program? To get if from the cable company is $15, but I can buy one for $299 or less.

you do not have to use the cable companies DVR, i have been using my PC as my DVR for quite a while..

there are beinfits to using the cable company DVR however, such as picture in picture, and the ability to record one show while watching another, but depending on the DVR that you are choosing to get, you have better options what you can do with your media once recorded, such as transfer it to a portable player, or burn it to disc (depends on what is supported by the DVR you buy)
